Garlic For Horses

Commonly called a “superfood”, garlic has been used by more cultures than any other herb for both nutritional and medicinal applications. It’s widely believed that garlic has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties and people are now also using garlic to treat high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Garlic is made of amino acids, minerals, vitamins and hundreds of sulfur compounds. It’s the sulfur compounds in garlic that people believe are mainly responsible for the suggested benefits.

Equi-Garlic is made with the highest quality garlic available. We use only 100% pure garlic grown in nutrient rich soil and we do not use pesticides or chemicals. In order to maintain the quality and potency of the nutrients, we use minimal heat when we make Equi-Garlic. This provides you and your horse a premium product that works both naturally and effectively to repel biting insects. And, like all of our products, Equi-Garlic contains no additives or fillers.

Natural Fly Control

Besides adding great flavor to foods and being healthy for people, horse owners recently found that garlic for horses works well as a natural insect repellent. Horses that eat garlic supplements produce an odor that naturally keeps away biting flies, mosquitoes, ticks and gnats. Insect control is extremely important to horse owners, especially with WNV (West Nile Virus) and EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis), and many horse owners are now using garlic for horses as a safe, effective alternative to chemical products. While flies may still be observed landing, they quickly leave the horse apparently repelled by the odor. Horse owners have reported varying degrees of success but most advise it takes 5-7 days to see results. Larger facilities and ranches may contact us for bulk supplies.

Garlic FAQ’s:

Garlic contains many active components, including potent oil with sulphur-containing compounds (allicin, alliin, and ajoene), enzymes (allinase, peroxidase and myrosinase), glucokinins, B group vitamins, vitamin C and flavonoids, citral, geraniol, linalool, aphellandrene and B phellandrene.

Garlic also contains a wide range of trace minerals, which include copper, iron, zinc, magnesium, germanium, and selenium. The key therapeutic ingredient in garlic is alliin. Alliin is an odorless sulfur-containing chemical derived from the amino acid cysteine. Allicin is formed when alliin, a sulfur-containing amino acid, comes into contact with the enzyme alliinase when raw garlic is chopped, crushed, or chewed. Allicin is what gives garlic its antibiotic properties and is responsible for its distinct odor.

Garlic also has antioxidant properties. The antioxidants found in garlic may contribute to this effect by protecting against the cell damage caused by damaging free radicals. Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause over time.

  • Related Research Articles:
  • The results of a study published in the 8/16/2000 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association show that garlic supplements may be able to fight off the ticks and hopefully decrease the risk of Lyme disease, especially in high-risk areas.
